Jihad in Seattle, and Revolution Muslim, et al

I hold a few truths to be self-evident. Among them:

• It generally takes a community to make a terrorist, and
• A community is held together by the strength of weak ties

With that in mind, we turn to the arrest in Seattle, Washington, at the end of last week, of Abu Khalid Abdul-Latif (AKA Joseph Anthony Davis) and Walli Mujahidh (AKA Frederick Domingue, Jr.). The investigation began on 03 June, of this year, and culminated in the arrests on 23 June (view Complaint). To make a long story very short, the suspects planned to shoot up a military facility in Seattle, and recruited a third individual whom Abdul-Latif had known for years. Individual number three promptly reported the plot to Seattle police who brought in the FBI, culminating in a weapons purchase and arrest.

So far so good.

While I could go on at some length about this case, I'm going to focus here on Abdul-Latif's Youtube account.

He had one.

I have downloaded all of his videos, but have yet to review them.

What I want to address first is not what he said, but who he associated with, the people with whom he had an ideological affinity, to whom he was bound by weak ties. Even a cursory examination of Abdul-Latif's online associations places him firmly in a social network of jihadi activists I know by a number of names - Revolution Muslim and Shariah4[insert country here], to name two. There are also multiple connections to Anwar al-Awlaki's non-Yemeni network of supporters.

The following is a heavily redacted sample of just a few of Abdul-Latif's Youtube friends and their connections. There are maybe another dozen HVE's among Abdul-Latif's Youtube friends. Remember, these are weak ties, not evidence that Abdul-Latif associated in the real world with any of these people - he didn't need to. That's the point. What concerns me is that everyone in Seattle seemed to have been taken by surprise when the CHS walked in the door (see the Complaint). Given the kind of people Abdul-Latif is connected to, he really ought to have been on somebody's radar. That's not a reflection on the folks in the Seattle JTTF, who turned in a stellar performance. Rather it's a problem likely rooted in the way information gets disseminated from Washington, DC.

The person behind this account identifies with the site www.shariah4america.com, which puts him into the Revolution Muslim/Shariah4 orbit. In addition he is two degrees of separation from Stockholm bomber Taimour al-Abdaly.

2. http://www.youtube.com/user/chekdamize7

This is the real prize. A well known and well-connected American jihadist. Operator of his own blog, and inheritor of the blog of Tarek Mehanna. He's something of a leading figure in the Revolution Muslim scene, if only because so many of his mates are now behind bars. Not only is he a Youtube friend of Abdul-Latif, but he also posted a number of comments on Abdul-Latif's pages.

In response to Abdul-Latif's video "The Need to be Unified" said:

Ummah wake up, open your eyes and use your minds.........living the deen leads to succes for us and ourselves and to give up the deen and chase money and comfort leads to our own destruction and the Ummah pays for it..............!!!!!!!!

Wake up NOW!

On Abdul-Latif's main page at Youtube, chekdamize7 said:

SubhanAllah ahki nice to see you again, let then know the truth, Ummah wake up!

And in response to Abdul-Latif's video "Muslims, Don't Be Fooled" chekdamize7 said:

yeah subhanAllah ahki, good job and good message and reminder, the problemis that Muslims are deviated and are ignornant to what islam truly is, and what Tawheed is, unity and loyalty to Allah and the Ummah' we are humiliated and lost, this is what happens when we turn away from the guidence from our Book (Quran) and Hadiths, most are just muslim by name and culture, but Allah has promised that that true group will always remain.....and will enter tha gates of jannah! Take care and stay strong!

The last contact between these two that occurs in the pages I have archived happened three months ago. If they communicated privately I have no knowledge of it.

Note to the Jawas in the audience: I've been collecting info on this guy since 2009, a year prior to hearing about him from you all.

An account dedicated to presenting Anwar al-Awlaki videos uploaded by a number of jihadi activists. The lists of subscriptions, subscribers, and friends are packed high and tight with Awlaki fanboys. Want to understand what motivated and inspired Abdul-Latif and Co.? Start here.

5. http://www.youtube.com/user/Shariah4USA

This appears to be a central node of the Revolution Muslim/Shariah4 network on Youtube.

A big tip of the hat to J.M. Berger (AKA Intelwire) for providing me with the URL of Abdul-Latif's Youtube account. He's got a book for sale. Consider buying it, either because or despite the fact that it was reviewed favorably by the New York Times. And thanks also to our mutual acquaintance who wishes he was more anonymous than he is, who actually came up with the URL of Abdul-Latif's Youtube account.
