The best way to poison the well is to say you are doing it. You don't actually *have* to do it, simply saying it is sufficient. And using the New York Times to deliver the message is a stroke of brilliance - almost as good as attaching a note to a dead body.
But seriously brothers, we're not poisoning the wells.
It's a hot day, and you're very thirsty.
That water down in the well looks mighty good, now doesn't it.
Go ahead, take a drink.
It won't kill you, honest.
And besides, you love death more than we love life. Right?

U.S. Seeks to Build Deterrence in Fight Against Terrorists
Eric Schmitt and Thom Shanker, New York TimesPosted on 18 March 2008 @ 20:53U.S. officials say a combination of efforts could establish deterrence against terrorist organizations, the strategy that helped protect the U.S. from a Soviet nuclear attack during the cold war. Interviews with senior officials involved in the effort provided the outlines of previously unreported missions to mute al-Qaeda's message, turn the jihadi movement's own weaknesses against it, and illuminate al-Qaeda's errors whenever possible.
To counter efforts by terrorists to plot attacks, raise money and recruit new members on the Internet, the government has mounted a secret campaign to plant bogus e-mail messages and Web site postings, with the intent to sow confusion, dissent and distrust among militant organizations, officials confirm.
