Effective use of the Internet for Intelligence Purposes Award for the past month goes to...

...the supporters of the PKK in the Turkish Armed Forces, who used YouTube to leak word of Turkey's planned invasion of northern Iraq a couple of days prior to the event. This was reported by Hurriyet [Turkish newspaper] on 23 February 2008. The video is posted here:

It features an audio recording of a presentation by Brig Gen Munir Erten, Commander of the General Staff Electronic Systems, which is apparently the Turkish military's SIGINT unit. The file was allegedly transferred out of Turkey to Switzerland, and from there it was uploaded to YouTube.

It is not clear if the PKK was able to make effective use of this advance notice.

[And yes, we know that the PKK is not an Islamist organization, but this is too interesting to not make mention of].
